HIC expresses its support for the people of Cuba through this statement from HIC Latin America (HIC-AL).

From the Latin American Office of the Habitat International Coalition (HIC-AL), we extend our deep solidarity to the people of Cuba, its inhabitants, as well as to Member and allied organizations working on the Island, in light of the severe energy, economic, and social crisis the country is facing due to the tightening of the blockade.

The shortage of fuel and the recent restrictions on energy supply have caused prolonged power outages, paralysis of transportation, disruptions in hospitals, water and sanitation systems, food shortages, and other essential services—seriously undermining the human rights of the population.

The organizations that make up HIC reject all forms of intervention and unilateral coercive measures that indiscriminately impact the civilian population. These actions contravene the fundamental principles of the International Human Rights Covenants, which recognize the right of all peoples to self-determination—an essential principle for peaceful coexistence in the region.

As an international network committed to habitat-related human rights, we reaffirm that no geopolitical strategy, economic interest, or logic of power can stand above human dignity. We urgently call for regional and international solidarity and for cooperation among peoples and states to address this crisis through an approach centered on social justice and sovereignty, ensuring dignity and well-being for the entire population.

Cuba is not alone—solidarity among peoples is more necessary today than ever!
