The 68th of the Commission of the Status of Women parallel event organized by the Women and Habitat Africa Working group took place on Monday 18th March 2024 at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The theme of the discussion was “Enhancing gender equality, women’s land and habitat rights to accelerate poverty eradication and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals”.
The discussion was developed around the following questions:
- What type of institutional arrangements are needed to address attitudes, norms or customary laws and traditions that have prevented women from inheriting or ownership of land in different African contexts?
- What strategies will facilitate poverty eradication and ensure Women’s full access, control and ownership of Land and Housing, including Inheritance Rights.
- What is the role of customary laws and practices in accelerating the process of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls?
- In reality, is it possible to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls?
- What role can education and financing institutions play towards poverty eradication and empowering women and girls?
- Since the SDGs were adopted in 2015, can any region show major progress towards achieving all the SDGs by 2030?
