Climate Change, Urban Displacement & Loss and Damage: An Urgent African Conversation

Across Africa, cities are being reshaped by the escalating impacts of climate change. For residents of informal settlements and underserved urban communities, these changes often bring devastating consequences: homes lost to floods, livelihoods destroyed by drought, and entire neighborhoods displaced by extreme weather events.

Yet, in the midst of these challenges, the voices of affected communities remain too often unheard.

The Habitat and Environment Working Group of HIC Africa invites you to a two-part Online Dialogue on Climate Change-Induced Displacement and Loss & Damage in African Cities, bringing together grassroots leaders, civil society, researchers, and policymakers to engage in this critical conversation.

Why This Dialogue Matters

Climate-induced displacement is no longer a distant threat—it’s a daily reality for thousands across African cities. Informal settlements, despite their high exposure to climate risk, often lack basic protections: land tenure, social safety nets, and resilient infrastructure.

This online series will:

  • Highlight grassroots experiences of climate displacement.

  • Explore how loss and damage mechanisms can address urban vulnerabilities.

  • Share community-led resilience strategies that are already making a difference.

  • Offer space for interactive dialogue, networking, and collaborative action.

Objectives of the exchange

  • Examine the extent and impact of climate-induced displacement in urban Africa.

  • Discuss the role of loss and damage frameworks in supporting affected communities.

  • Elevate grassroots voices and share successful local responses.

  • Identify pathways for policy change, advocacy, and partnership.
