What is the World Social Forum?
The 17th edition of the World Social Forum (WSF) will take place in Cotonou, Benin this year from August 4th to August 8th 2026. It is an essential democratic space where social movements, networks, and civil society organisations opposed to neoliberalism and a commodified world come together to exchange ideas, share experiences, and network for effective action. Within today’s hostile political climate, characterized by the aggressive financialization of housing and land rights, increased persecution of human rights defenders, shrinking civic space, it is an important opportunity to centre global struggles for land, housing, and dignity.
Why is HIC joining?
HIC’s presence at the WSF is an act of deep grassroots solidarity at a time when asserting social movement agendas and feminist approaches has become increasingly critical. HIC is seizing this crucial moment to coordinate with diverse social movements, centre habitat-related rights, and establish solidarity between grassroots organisations across the urban-rural divide. This milestone event represents a key moment of our Convergence of Social and Feminist Movements, a process that champions democratic, self-management principles, and centers the voices, agendas, and leadership of grassroots women and frontline communities.
We therefore invite you to join the HIC delegation, or let us know if you are already planning to attend, so that we can coordinate our efforts.
