They will feed us! A people’s route to African food sovereignty Autonomous assessment of the UN Food Systems Summit national pathways and the Dakar 2 Summit compacts

We are excited to announce the release of the report, “They Will Feed Us! A People’s Route to African Food Sovereignty.” This autonomous assessment, conducted by African producer organisations and CSOs, offers a people’s critical analysis of the UN Food Systems Summit national pathways and the Dakar 2 Summit compacts, based on case studies in Zambia, Morocco, Mali, Kenya and the People’s Republic of the Congo. The French version will be ready soon.

This independent assessment sheds light on various inadequacies and negative impacts associated with these food systems policy initiatives. The report finds that they are often externally driven, rushed, and maintain a top-down approach, rather than organically evolving from the needs, experiences, and proposals of local actors, especially those most affected by food policies and most involved in food provisioning.

However, amidst these challenges, the assessment also points towards a positive direction, highlighting actionable steps that can lead to the reduction of dependence on food imports and the realisation of a vision for food sovereignty that will bring tangible benefits to both communities and ecosystems.
