Call for Facilitators: Co-Learning Space on Climate Justice

If you are a HIC Member and have practical, learning or teaching  experience in climate justice please apply to join a group of facilitators for the co-learning space on Climate Justice. 

What is a co-learning space? 

Co-learning spaces are cross-regional, multi-session encounters that support HIC Members and Allies to prioritize, strategize, learn and advocate together on human rights related to habitat. Each co-learning space  is open to all HIC Members, Friends and allies and will involve four live, online sessions and parallel activities in September and October 2023. By drawing on emancipatory learning practices, each co-learning space is facilitated by HIC Members with the support of HIC regional and thematic structures.

Role of the facilitators

Co-Learning Space facilitators will  be part of a cross-regional team of 6  people (2 from Africa, 2 from MENA and 2 from Latin America) that will plan, implement and help in the follow-up of the four Co-Learning Space sessions. Facilitators will contribute their experience in  climate justice and their specific regional perspective in the organization and development of  the HIC Co-Learning space and a corresponding strategic action plan to promote and advocate for climate justice. 

Facilitators will collaborate closely with HIC Learning Officers from the General Secretariat, HIC-AL and HLRN and the Coordinators of Africa, MENA, Latin America, HLRN, the General Secretary and HIC President during the five stages of the Co-Learning process: preparation, planning, implementation, post-implementation and follow-up. 

General Responsibilities:

  • Participate actively in all preparatory activities by attending online meetings, replying to communications promptly and providing constructive feedback on documents.
  • Contribute thematic input and regional perspectives during the preparatory, planning, implementation and follow-up stages.
  • Contribute to the identification of learning objectives, develop the content outline of each Co-Learning space session, and develop an attractive invitation.
  • Co-facilitate the four Co-Learning Space sessions and actively participate in cross-regional dialogue and strategic discussions during and after the sessions.
  • Offer lessons learnt and support the consolidation of knowledge and resources shared during and after the Co-Learning Space sessions.

Specific Roles by stage

Total estimated time dedication per facilitator: 120 hours

Stage 1: Preparatory phase
  • Actively participate in a regional consultation in April to identify the strategic priorities of HIC regional members. 
  • Participate in 2 kick-off meetings (1.5 hour each) in April and May. The first will focus on objectives, co-learning space phases, timelines and requirements. The second will prepare for a cross-regional brainstorming meeting with HIC Members.
  • Actively participate in a cross-regional brainstorming meeting (1.5 hour) in May  with HIC members contributing strategic priorities to inform the development of the co-learning space content.  
Stage 2: Planning the co-learning space
  • Participate in 8  planning meetings (1.5 hour each) for the co-learning spaces from May to August 2023). Planning meetings will take place every two weeks at a convenient time as identified by the  facilitator group. 
  • Actively communicate  with other facilitators and learning officers in between planning meetings.
  • Contribute to the identification of learning objectives 
  • Contribute to the elaboration of the learning outline for each session (content, speakers, activities, materials) prepared by the learning officers. 
  • Help to create an attractive invitation (e.g. video/GIF) of the Co-Learning space that will be shared for HIC Members, Friends and allies.
Stage 3: Implementation 
  • Co-facilitate four online co-learning space sessions from September to October 2023 (one co-learning space session every second week)
  • Engage in cross-regional dialogue and strategic discussions, in the online sessions and on the Google Classroom platform. 
Stage 4: Post Implementation and consolidation
  • Support learning officers in identifying materials for an online repository of reference materials.
  • Participate in one reflection meeting after the co-learning sessions (in December). 
  • Participate in the review of podcast scripts prepared by the learning officers  and recording one podcast episode (first trimester 2024). 
Stage 5 Follow up
  • Participate in 2 additional meetings (between November and December 2023) for the collective development  of a cross-regional strategic action work plan for advocacy and promotion of Climate Justice.

Requirements of the facilitator

  • Knowledge of the subject (Climate Justice).
  • Practical and learning/teaching experience in Climate Justice.
  • Willingness to collaborate cross-culturally, cross-regionally and across language and time zones. 
  • Ability to listen to other facilitators and make collective decisions. 
  • Willingness to communicate regularly through online meetings, email and messaging services such as WhatsApp*
  • Familiarity with Google docs and Zoom is an asset.
  • Time dedication: 120 hours of live and parallel activities split over the described 5 co-learning stages.

*HIC will provide interpretation for online meetings; however, facilitators are expected to make use of online translation tools to bridge language differences in written communications  (e.g., emails, Google docs and messages)

Timeframe

  • The duration of the five co-learning space phases will last from April 2023 to March 2024. 
  • Eight planning meetings will run from May to August 2023. Each meeting will last 1.5 hours and take place every two weeks at 17:00 South Africa time (check your local time here)
  • The four, live co-learning space sessions (3-hours each) will take place between  September and October 2023. 
  • Post implementation and follow up will take place from  December 2023 to March 2024.

Communication 

  • Facilitators are required to actively communicate among themselves and with the learning officers throughout the co-learning space stages. The HIC learning officers will communicate and support with logistical and strategic inputs. 
  • Communication can happen through email, WhatsApp, Google docs and/or other media of choice identified by the facilitators’ team (using online translation tools to facilitate cross-regional communication).

Interpretation and Translation

  • HIC will ensure interpretation in Arabic, English, Spanish and French for online scheduled meetings throughout the five stages and translation of final documents.
  • Between meetings, facilitators are expected to make use of online translation tools to bridge language differences for emails, Google docs and WhatsApp messages. 

Converting time zones 

  • Due to cross-regional work between Latin America, Africa and MENA regions, co-facilitators will be working across different time zones. Online meetings will therefore be held in late afternoon/evening for the Africa and MENA regions, and morning/noon for the Latin America region.

Compensation 

  • HIC will  provide compensation to each facilitator for time dedicated and to cover costs of wifi/ data connection. 
  • Each facilitator will receive the same amount of 1,200 Euro for the total duration of the work with 50% transferred half way through the process, and 50%  transferred to each facilitator upon completion of Stage 5.
